MaCAD Students learned to develop Interactive 3D web applications, to publish their Grasshopper Definitions online, making them accessible to everyone, even not skilled users who never used Rhino or Grasshopper!
How? During the Digital Tools for Cloud-based Data Management seminar, students were trained by faculty Luis Fraguada and Will Pearson, both developers at McNeel, to use Rhino Compute, a cutting edge open source project developed by McNeel that allows designers to run Rhino on the cloud as a REST API and access it from any device with an internet connection.
By being able to run parameterized designs in the web, this process proposes a more collaborative workflow by taking advantage of the ubiquity of web-based frameworks, enabling designers to interact in a common online platform with other professionals or users who might not necessarily have the required modelling skills, allowing them to share their design intentions by exploring their models in comprehensive and accessible way. Moreover, it allows for a more fluent collaboration between the different agents of the design process, empowering new collaborative workflows that suit the demand of today’s interconnectivity that often involves many international teams working together, of which MaCAD students are a great example of.
Guided by Luis and Will, MaCAD students were able to develop interactive applications that address many different topics.

HIGHLIGHTS
CLOUDSCAPE
MaCAD Student: Hesham Shawqy
The purpose of project “Cloudscape” is to create a web-based application for landscape zoning solutions. This online spatial configurator allows the user to interact with the online interface and identify the landscape plot boundary, total area, different zones area, number of trees, and different visualization styles. The project was created using Grasshopper3d for Rhino, ThreeJS, Javascript, HTML, and RhinoCompute.

LUNAR CONFIGURATOR
MaCAD Student: German Bodenbender
Lunar Configurator includes different scenarios and parametric design solutions on the Moon. Everyone in the web can configure its own design proposal by changing the value of different parameters including location, time, solar radiation, number of components, etc. Lunar configurator is articulated in 5 parts, each one dedicated to a different step of the learning and design process: (1) A Data Management Exercises: The final projects created for the Data Management seminar (2) In-class assignments: A compilation of our learnings and explorations; (3) Examples and References: Series of projects created by the faculty to serve as examples; (4) Final Studio Project: Presentation of the studio project using what we have learned from Data Management seminar; (5) Credits

THE FOREST PAVILION
MaCAD Student: Basel Ghazaly
Can we democratize performance simulations to evaluate design decisions so that anyone can make tweeks on his geometry and then run simulations to validate his decisions? The Forest Pavilion is a proof of concept for this democratization of performance simulation access. It enables the user to manipulate the form of the pavilion and instantly get readings and visualization for the total and average Radiation, the average sunlight hours and a shadow study for a specific day of the year.
RANDOM CONTEXT GENERATOR APP
MaCAD Student: Keshava Narayan Karthikeyan
The Random Context Generator App is a solution to the problem of creating contexts for architectural models. The app solves a very important problem of helping architects and clients visualise their models right in the browser in the interactive context designed by themselves by using the sliders and the checkboxes in a user interface that is highly intuitive. This app generates contexts based on the information input by the user and the architecture / client can view their designs interactively in the browser without any professional assistance. The model generated by the user can also be downloaded in a .3dm format which can readily be used with sophisticated rendering software which can be used to produce even better results. This app on further development can be used to design urban blocks based on user requirements also.

EVOLUTIVE COCOON
MaCAD Student: Kyunghwan Kim
The objective of the Evolutive cocoon is to allow the user to play the configuration of 5 domes and its analysis on the web. The Evolutive cocoon can be controlled by 5 points on the web which is working in the Rhino App-server. Users can see different configurations of 5 domes by changing points position and radius of domes. But also, solar hour analysis is shown directly after changing point positions. By clicking off the ‘Sunlight Analysis’ button, we can see the curve of those domes which represent structure.
LAST TOWER AND THE FIRST ROOF
MaCAD Student: Pedro Manuel Arrozeiro Ribeiro
The configurator enables a simple and effective simulation of the environmental performance of a Tower and a Canopy, according to different parameters of height and shape. Users can therefore take informed decisions about the design solutions based on the varying effect of them.
