IAAC2024

Tuesday 21st, 16:15h – 16:55h – Roundtable [in Spanish]

Challenges and Opportunities for Building with Industrialized Solid Wood

Mass Madera is a network aimed at accelerating the use of industrialized solid wood in Spain as a solution to reducing emissions associated with the construction sector and the need to continue providing housing and urban solutions to a growing population. This roundtable will address the challenges and opportunities for transitioning to this industrialized and decarbonized form of construction.

Speakers: Elena Orte (SUMA Arquitectura and MAEBB Faculty), Juan Velayos Lluis (IAAC Board of Trustees President), Ferran Urgellés Camprubí (Production & Supply Chain Mgr. Woodea), Carles Martí (CEO Grup Boix)

Moderated by: Vicente Guallart (IAAC Co-Founder)

Wednesday 22nd, 13:10h – 13:40h – Talk [in Spanish]

Digital, Intelligent, Recycled, and Biological Matter: New Materials for Construction

The presentation will showcase research conducted by IAAC on the potential of combining design with materials science and data. From projects using catalytic materials that absorb CO2 to graphene, biocarbon, or construction waste, the presentation will introduce solutions at various Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) that contribute to transforming architecture into a living, decarbonizing, and responsive organism. Additionally, the presentation will explore the use of artificial intelligence as a tool to implement concepts of “urban mining” in the construction sector. Machine learning and computer vision technologies in these projects are employed to analyze, map, and extract information about the materiality of the built environment, aiming to create new digital material libraries that support circular economy principles.

Speaker: Mathilde Marengo (IAAC Head of Studies and Co-director of the Master in City & Technology)

Thursday 23rd, 11:50h – 12:10h – Talk [in Spanish]

Robotics for Sustainable Construction

The talk will discuss the challenges facing the construction industry to reduce its ecological footprint and increase productivity. New technologies such as computational design, digital fabrication, IoT, robotics, and artificial intelligence offer the promise of affordable, rapid, sustainable, and customizable architecture.

Speaker: Yara Tayoun (IAAC Robotics Lab R+D Manager)
