MASS MADERA

IAAC Barcelona

Mass Madera is a network designed to accelerate the use of industrialized timber in Spain.

The Challenge

We need transformative solutions to achieve negative (or at least net-zero) emissions in our built environment. A sustainably managed productive forest offers the most effective natural solution for carbon absorption, and integrating this resource into construction presents one of the most impactful strategies for decarbonization.

Our Solution

Industrialized timber  has the potential to create an exemplary circular economy model, offering numerous benefits:

  • Renewable material
  • Promotes sustainable forest management
  • Stores CO₂
  • Lightweight and easy to transport
  • Highly industrializable
  • Encourages prefabrication
  • Serves as both an excellent insulator and a structural material
  • Enables faster construction
  • Ensures greater control and precision on-site
  • Reduces on-site risks
  • Minimizes construction-related pollution

The Project

Mass Madera is a project initiated by the Institute of Advanced Architecture (IAAC) and co-funded by Built by Nature. Its main mission is to accelerate the use of industrialized timber as a solution to reducing emissions associated with the building sector and the need to continue providing housing and urban solutions to a growing population in Spain.

Who is it for?

The network aims to establish, coordinate, and connect key players, leaders, and pioneers in the use of these construction systems to accelerate their growth in construction as one of the only ecological alternatives in the context of the current climate emergency. The target audience include:

  • Developers

  • Investors

  • Designers (Architects/Engineers)

  • Property/Asset Owners & Managers

  • Insurance Companies

  • Cities, National and Regional Governments
