This week marked the start of the 2024 Academic Year at the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC), welcoming over 300 students from 55 different countries. These students have enrolled in IAAC’s diverse range of on-campus and online Educational Programmes.
During the opening event, IAAC Director Daniel Ibañéz and IAAC Academic Director Areti Markopoulou took the stage to celebrate the arrival of this new generation of change-makers joining the Institute this year.
IAAC students are a multicultural and diverse group of people from all over the world. They come from a wide range of backgrounds and academic disciplines, encompassing various fields related to the built environment and beyond. These include but are not limited to architecture, arts, sciences, design, engineering, social sciences, and other related professions.
IAAC welcomed the students enrolled in the on-campus master’s programmes which include: Master in Advanced Architecture, Master in City & Technology, Master in Robotics & Advanced Construction, Master in Advanced Ecological Buildings & Biocities, Master in Design for Emergent Futures, Postgraduate in 3D Printing Architecture, Postgraduate Diploma in Fab Academy, and Postgraduate Diploma in Fabricademy. IAAC also launched two new masters for the academic year; the Master in Advanced Urban Regeneration in collaboration with UPDIS Shenzhen, in China, and the Master in Artificial Intelligence for Architecture and the Built Environment.
Additionally, the online masters kicked off this week, with students joining the following programmes: Master in Advanced Computation for Architecture and Design (MaCAD), Maestría en Urbanismo Próximo, and Master in Design for Distributed Innovation.
The IAAC team introduced themselves, while new and second-year students shared their backgrounds and aspirations. Throughout the academic year, students will have access to IAAC’s facilities seven days a week. They can participate in various activities promoted and organised by IAAC, such as Lecture Series, Open Days, and more. All on-campus programmes will be held at IAAC’s locations: the main campus in Poblenou, Barcelona, and a forested campus in Collserola Park. The main campus, located on Carrer de Pujades 102, offers a space for research, production, and architecture projects, including Fab Lab Barcelona. IAAC Atelier, also on the same street, provides students with a 2,000-square-metre space for individual and team projects.
The Valldaura Campus is IAAC’s facility in Collserola Park, is an innovation hub featuring cutting-edge energy, information, and fabrication technologies. It houses a laboratory to drive research and set new standards for self-sufficiency.
