Solar Greenhouse

IAAC Barcelona

A sustainable, energy-efficient greenhouse, offering a model for the future of food production and sustainable living.

The Challenge

Modern urban environments demand a shift towards self-sufficient food production systems that can be integrated into both rural and urban settings. The challenge was to design a sustainable, energy-efficient greenhouse that not only contributes to food production but also enhances ecological practices, making use of local resources.

Our Solution

A full-scale prototype designed to support intensive food production at Valldaura Labs. The project integrates sustainable materials, advanced construction techniques, and solar energy harvesting to create a greenhouse adaptable to various environments.

Type of Project

A student-driven initiative under the Master in Advanced Ecological Buildings and Biocities (MAEBB) programme, showcasing sustainable architectural practices. It is self-funded and designed as a replicable model for sustainable food production in both urban and rural areas.

Project Outputs

The key output is a full-scale, sustainable prototype constructed from locally sourced Aleppo Pine, featuring a heliomorphic diamond-shaped roof that maximises solar energy capture through integrated semi-transparent solar panels.

IAAC Barcelona

The Project

The project aims to reimagine food production in modern settings, particularly in dense urban environments where space is limited. It promotes self-sufficiency through innovative design and ecological practices.

A significant emphasis was placed on sustainability and minimising the environmental footprint. The Aleppo Pine used in construction was locally sourced from the Valldaura forest, and the entire process—from tree cutting to material processing—was handled on-site. This ensures minimal transportation and promotes an understanding of material cycles.

The greenhouse’s use of local resources and waste materials exemplifies the principles of circular economy and resource efficiency. The design also incorporates advanced solar and hydroponic technologies, optimising energy use and maximising food production.

Who is it for?

The Solar Greenhouse is designed for communities looking to enhance food production in both urban and rural environments. Its scalable and adaptable nature makes it ideal for anyone interested in sustainable agriculture.
