IAAC designed Ohla’s Hotel Musical Robotic Façade by applying an algorithm that translated Max Richter’s “Vivaldi’s Four Seasons” album into ceramic carvings

The world-renowned architecture publication ArchDaily opened nominations for the Building of the Year 2018. This year’s selection includes some Building of the Year relevant architecture firms alongside a selection of disruptive and emerging practices. All of them capture architecture’s capacity to spark positive change in the environment.

Ohla Hotel’s building in Barcelona’s Eixample district participates on 2018 Archdaily’s competition. This construction was developed by a team formed by Isern Associates, Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) and Ceràmica Cumella and it featured as a cutting-edge architectural and design element its Musical Robotic Façade, which is the result of translating Max Richter’s “Vivaldi’s Four Seasons” album into ceramic carvings.

By applying an algorithm designed by IAAC, a robot was able to transform a musical input into carvings on the ceramic bricks covering the hotel’s façade. This work has been possible thanks to the sum of talent of the Architect Daniel Isern and his team, the Ceramist Toni Cumella and Master in Robotics and Avanced Construction (MRAC) Director Alexandre Dubor.

We encourage you to vote for this cutting-edge project HERE! You have until the 31st January to nominate it! Many other interesting initiatives like this, combining robotics and construction, are waiting for you in our new MRAC programme.
