Mass is More, a feature-length documentary produced by the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) and directed by Jaume Cebolla, offers an immersive journey that unveils the design and construction process of the iconic “Mass is More” pavilion. This unique installation, exhibited in the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in October 2022, is a collaborative effort between IAAC and Bauhaus Earth, explaining both its creation and the future role of timber in construction.

Mass is More-Adrià-Goula

This is the third documentary produced by IAAC following Valldaura, a Quaratine Cabin that can be found in Filmin and Protegim les escoles‘ which has been selected for the BARQ (Barcelona International Architecture Film Festival).
The premiere of “Mass is More” presents an opportunity to appreciate innovative design and a commitment to the decarbonization of the building sector connected with the sustainable forest management. The documentary provides an in-depth exploration of the transition from 20th-century materials to 21st-century ecological innovations, shedding light on how regenerative materials, notably cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels from local forests, are reshaping the construction industry by reducing its environmental impact.

“Mass is More” offers a first-person perspective on the transformative journey of wood and explores the pavilion’s design, seamlessly integrating with the original grid while creating new pathways and view corridors.

The premiere of “Mass is More” will take place Monday 16th of October, 2023, at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona. Witness the pavilion’s evolution as envisioned by Daniel Ibáñez and Vicente Guallart of IAAC and Alan Organschi of Bauhaus Earth. The event is part of MASS MADERA, a national network of pioneers whose main mission is to facilitate and promote the construction of green buildings, and work towards the decarbonization of architecture.
