Last October IAAC successfully inaugurated the first edition of the  MaCAD – Master in Advanced Computation for Architecture and Design! MACAD is the world’s first online accredited master programme in the field of AEC (Architecture, Engineering and Construction), with a focus on Computational Design and Integration of new digital technologies in the Architectural design and construction process. 

MaCAD Faculty and Academic staff welcomed a multidisciplinary and multi-national team of 25 students, live connected from all the 5 continents.

Students include Architects, Engineers and Researchers, willing to widen their knowledge and acquire new skills in computational design, getting ready to innovate in the Architecture and Design sector.

The class includes professionals and experts, currently working in Architecture Offices or Academia, who joined the programme thanks to its flexible schedule. Some of students are in fact following the program in the Asynchronous format, which gives them the possibility to follow the Lectures and tutorials any time is compatible with their daily schedule, but ensuring interaction with faculty in the Live mentoring Hours.

The MaCAD online master programme counts on an outstanding faculty team, with internationally renowned architects, researchers  and academics, and it is divided into three modules / postgraduate programs. 

During the ongoing first module “Advanced Computation for Environmental and Structural Design” students are working with Senior Faculty Jane Burry,, Arthur Mamou-mani, Angelos Chronis, Manja van de Worp and Rodrigo Aguirre among others

The Studio is led by Rodrigo Aguirre, Computational Design expert and Senior Researcher at IAAC, leading projects such as the design of the world first 3d printed bridge with ACCIONA, and currently involved in the design of Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia church with MYAA Studio

In the Complex Forming seminar, students work with Arthur Mamou-mani, known worldwide as a reference for computation and digital fabrication in architecture. Arthur is designer of the Galaxia temple at Burning man, based on the use of complex computational design tools for timber architecture. 

The Environmental Analysis for Architectural Design Seminar is led by PhD Architect and the Head of City Intelligence Lab at the Austrian Institute for Technology Angelos Chronis, a leader in the research on environmental simulation for architecture and urbanism design, including CFD analysis. 

In the Structural Optimization Strategies Seminar, students will count on the guidance of senior Faculty Manja van de Worp, principal of YIP Structural Engineering London, whose expertise and research lies in structural, geometrical and material complex projects.  Manja worked from 2007 for ARUP in the Advanced Geometry Unit on projects such as the Bombay Sapphire Distillery by Heatherwick Studio.

Last but not least, Jane Burry, the leader of the Theory course, is the Dean of Architecture at the Swinburne University of Technology, the winner of the architecture teaching award of ACADIA, and worldwide recognized for innovative teaching in the field of digital design in architecture. Jane was also project architect in Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia of Barcelona.

The characteristic of the MaCAD online master programme is that, in contrast to the traditional Online programs and tutorials, it offers students a real-class “virtual” environment, based on a continuous, interactive and collaborative learning process with the faculty and colleagues. The MaCAD is not a solitary experience, but a full educational experience. Furthermore, the MaCAD online master programme is accredited with 60 ECTS by the UPC – Polytechnic University of Catalunya, one of the best 50 universities in the world.
