IAAC presents SCALExD project
The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) is happy to present a new European project called SCALExD, led by the Robotics Lab.
SCALExD is a European initiative aimed at training a new generation of “digital” craftsmen—emerging designers, artists, and architects—through the development of an interdisciplinary educational program at the crossroads of art, design, architecture, and engineering. Running from 2024 to 2027, the project brings together higher education institutions and industrial partners from France, Spain, and Austria to promote large-scale design and fabrication using sustainable materials and advanced technologies.
SCALExD will equip both educators and students with practical and theoretical skills in creating large-scale artifacts, fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration and innovation. Based on the diverse research backgrounds of its partners, the project will create a modular curriculum, test new teaching formats, and develop open digital learning resources such as videos, guides, and documentation.
The project includes three intensive workshops involving 90 students, a short program for professionals, and a masterclass that will culminate in a public event linked to “Barcelona – UNESCO World Capital of Architecture 2026.” By merging craftsmanship with digital tools and sustainability, SCALExD contributes to rethinking design education and building a future-ready creative workforce.
