The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) is pleased to announce that the projects Superbarrio and TOVA are among the 61 finalists of the New European Bauhaus (NEB) Awards 2023. From a pool of over 1450 submissions, a total of 61 projects have been chosen, illustrating the presence of remarkable, environmentally friendly, and inclusive initiatives across the European Union and the Western Balkans.

The New European Bauhaus initiative serves as a creative and interdisciplinary platform that connects the European Green Deal with our living spaces and experiences. TOVA and Superbarrio have gained recognition for their exceptional quality, alignment with NEB values, and significant potential to promote beauty, sustainability, and inclusion through the NEB initiative. The prizes aim to acknowledge and reward existing projects as well as concepts developed by young individuals. These projects and concepts showcase that the sustainable solutions advocated by the European Green Deal can also embody inclusivity and aesthetic appeal, enriching people’s daily lives with high-quality experiences.

The online public voting is currently open until May 24, 2023, at 18:00 CET.

SuperBARRIO, is an open-source video game designed for smartphones and tablets. Initially developed as a pilot in the framework of the Master in City & Technology of IAAC, it has been implemented in Barcelona (2017) to co-design the Superilla pilot project, in Favara (2018) to co-design with kids the Fam Cultural Park, in Genoa (2018) to co-design the Casa Gavoglio area, as part of the H2020 project UNalab ( UNalab project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No. 730052) and in Nantes, Porto and Sofia (2019) to co-design the healthy corridors as part of H2020 Urbinat project (URBiNAT project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 776783). It empowers architects and public entities to engage citizens in participatory design processes for public spaces while promoting sustainability and inclusiveness. Users can visualize their neighborhoods in 3D, customize elements, and incorporate functions and services related to ecology, energy, mobility, leisure, and culture. The game evaluates proposals based on accessibility, economy, productivity, ecology, and social interaction, enabling non-specialists to actively contribute to urban design and grasp the intricacies of decision-making.

TOVA is Spain’s first 3D printed prototype using earth, built with a Crane WASP. The project was born from the ongoing research developed by a group of students and professionals from the Postgraduate in 3D Printing Architecture to find new ways of facing the social and environmental challenges of the future. The construction, that has been carried out at the Valldaura Labs, represents the bridge between the past vernacular earthen architecture and the future of large scale 3D printing technology.
