IAAC Exhibition: Thriving together in Future Cities

In the face of ever-growing and complex planetary challenges, the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) is proud to present its end-of-year exhibition for 2023. The exhibition, titled “Thriving Together in Future Cities,” pushes us to reflect on the design processes, built forms and novel experiences to thrive together in future cities. What are the potentials for advanced technologies, such as digital manufacturing and computational design combined with biology, sociology, data science, fashion and environmental sciences, among others, in enabling design to shape this future?

The projects showcased in the exhibition will delve into innovative proposals and designs for more inclusive, resilient and positive futures, within the realms of communities, spaces and the ecology. “Thriving Together” invites visitors to not only collectively reflect on our goals towards this future, but also how we can shape these through co-design processes with multiple others, including human, non-human, cultural and technological beings.
From advanced architecture and computation, to ecological buildings, from urban technologies and innovative urbanism, to emergent futures, from digital fashion to machines that make, from robotics in construction to distributing design, join us in celebrating the achievements of IAAC’s classes of 2022/23 and 2021/23.
The “Thriving Together in Future Cities” exhibition will run from June 30th to September 8th at the IAAC Atelier, located at C/ Pujades 59. IAAC is delighted to invite visitors to the Exhibition Opening and IAAC Educational Programmes Excellence Award Ceremony on June 30th at 18:00 in the IAAC Atelier. The ceremony and opening will be followed by some beats and some beers, so stick around!
Following the Opening, the exhibition will be accessible exclusively on selected dates. Secure your visit with a reservation here.
The REGEN Award, promoted by Triodos Bank, recognizes efforts that promote regeneration in the disciplines of architecture, urban planning, and the development of original layouts for occupancy in multiple settings. These consist of educational, residential, cultural, commercial, agroecological, and tourist environments to name a few.
The Valldaura Labs, located in the Collserola Natural Park, is a project promoted by the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia for the creation of a self-sufficient habitat research center. By focusing on a circular economy, ecological design, and social design it continues to push the limits of co-creating and incorporating educational methodologies. Since 2018 the Master in Advanced Ecological Buildings & Biocities is an immersive postgraduate programme for students from all over the world. The mantra of “learn-by-living” allows students to be part of an immersive experience, as the goal is to develop human activities in harmony with the environment and society. In participating in this programme they have the opportunity to be part of several aesthetic experimental projects like Forest Lab for Observational Research and Analysis (FLORA).
Innovation, immersion, and aspiration to create new forms to aid the environment continues. Next year, as the MAEBB expands, Valldaura Labs will foster local, state and international collaborations to secure funding for a Horizon Europe project addressing wood-based decarbonisation pathways to renovate the built environment, thereby leading to innovative actions with a global impact.
