The webinar, introduced by MDDI Director Tomas Vivanco, will explore the cutting-edge work being done in the field of distributed innovation and highlight how the program is equipping students with the skills and knowledge they need to make a positive impact on the world. With a focus on the intersection of design, technology, ecosystems, and communities, MDDI aims to improve interspecies wellbeing through innovative solutions. The webinar will host a series of experts (Giovanna Danies Turano, Thomas Duggan and Santiago Fuentemilla) and students (Annie Ferlatte and Victor Freudnt) talks that will share their unique perspectives on the latest trends and advancements in design innovation. The event will wrap up with a Q&A session moderated by Josefina Nano, coordinator of MDDI. This will be a great opportunity to ask questions and engage with our speakers and fellow attendees.

About Tomas Vivanco: 

Tomas Vivanco is an Architect, Master in Advanced Architecture from the Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC), Master in Advanced Design from ELISAVA, and PhD (c) in Architecture & Urban Planning, Digital Futures group from Tongji University in Shanghai. He co-founded and co-directed Distributed Design Foundation and Fab Lab Santiago, one of the pioneers Fab Labs in Chile.

About Giovanna Danies Turano: 

Giovanna Danies is a Biologist and Microbiologist from Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá Colombia. She pursued her Master’s degree in Plant Pathology also at Universidad de los Andes. In 2015 Giovanna received a PhD in Plant Pathology from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, USA. She was selected by the directors of graduate studies in the plant sciences graduate fields to receive the Barbara McClintock Award. She currently works as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Design at Universidad de los Andes, where she is creating a minor in Biodesign and teaching the Biodesign, Magical Mushroom and Mischievous Mold, and Sexy Science: Effective Communication courses.

About Thomas Duggan: 

Thomas Duggan is an artist and also the director of Thomas Duggan Studio, a collaborative and multidisciplinary research studio exploring Craft, Design, Material Science, Architecture and Sculpture. Thomas has published work within leading scientific journals including Nature Nanotechnology, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America as well as exhibiting at the V&A, Tate and MoMA. Thomas is guest lecturer, workshop and research facilitator at the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) lecturer on the Master in Design for Distributed Innovation and postgraduate lecturer in Craft and Material Practices at AUP.

About Santiago Fuentemilla: 

Santiago Fuentemilla holds a Master’s degree in Architecture from the University of La Salle, Spain. He completed the Fab Academy in 2012, specializing in digital manufacturing and rapid prototyping at MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms. Since 2013, he has been a core team member at Fab Lab Barcelona, leading the Future Learning research area, which focuses on innovative educational models to foster growth, learning, and creativity in uncertain futures. Santiago has been a professor in the Master in Design for Emergent Futures (MDEF) since 2017.
