Lecture Abstract:

Construction and design principles of Free Form timber architecture in Asia and Europe.

The presentation from Kai Strehlke, head of CAD/CAM-programming at Swiss timber construction company Blumer Lehmann, puts an emphasis on production. At their production site the Swiss timber construction company produces complex free form geometries with high precision and tolerances below one millimeter. In addition to his presentation of projects such as the Cambridge Mosque by Marks Barfield Architects, Kai Strehlke will also give an insight in smaller works and experiments from the university context.

About Kai Strehlke

Kai Strehlke joined Blumer Lehmann in 2015 to refine the relationship between digital data and CNC manufacturing, especially for large-scale timber structures. His team is responsible for CAD/CAM solutions. For five years, he also taught Design and Digital Processes at the Department of Architecture, Bern University of Applied Sciences. Prior to Blumer Lehmann, he worked at Herzog & de Meuron, the renowned architecture firm in Basel, where he developed the Department of Digital Technologies. Kai began his career at the Swiss Federal School of Technology (ETH), both as lecturer and researcher. He submitted his PhD to the Zurich-based School’s Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD) chair. The topic: “The Digital Ornament in Architecture, its Generation, Production and Application with Computer-Controlled Technologies.”
