Daniel Ibáñez
Daniel Ibáñez is a Spanish practicing architect and urbanist and Doctor of Design from Harvard University GSD. Daniel has recently been appointed Director of the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC). His professional, research and academic focus is on the architectural and urban implications of advanced mass timber construction. He is building the tallest social housing mass timber building in Spain and he is co-author of the book Wood Urbanism: From the Molecular to the Territorial (Actar, 2019). Additionally, he is Senior Urban Consultant at the World Bank, advising international governments and institutions on timber housing and timber urban development.
Lecture Abstract
Buildings result from spatially fixing materials, energy, labor, and capital flows from local and distant sources. Their construction typically entails the transformation of other landscapes elsewhere, large emissions, and destructive footprints. Failing to account for these interdependencies between extraction, production, circulation, accumulation, and disposal of these flows occludes critical ecological and architectural connections. In the context of a warming planet, this talk offers a view of design as an ecological agent to help transition from a fossil-fuel, carbon-intensive economy to one based on renewable materials and sources: design as a powerful agent to stand against the predominance of fire in favor of a return of flow in producing urban form.
