Ilaena Mariam Napier is a South African born architectural technologist, researcher and designer with a Master’s degree in Advanced Architecture (MAA02) from the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC). She is currently working in the European Department as a digital fabrication assistant and faculty assistant.
She completed her undergraduate bachelor degree in Architectural Studies from the University of Cape Town (UCT), where she graduated with distinction. Upon completing her bachelor’s degree she worked at Open City Architects in Cape Town, where she developed her skills on a variety of projects at all scales and project phases.
Ilaena’s professional interests include material innovation, digital fabrication and sustainable design. Her master thesis project developed at IAAC focused on ‘additive manufacturing of seaweed as a biocomposite material.
