The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia is happy to present the InnoChain exhibition Practice Futures: Building Design For a New Material Age at KADK in Copenhagen. The exhibition showcases the results of the 15 Innochain PhD projects from 6 institutions across Europe. With a strong industry focus, the PhDs are undertaken in collaboration with 14 cutting-edge industry partners from across the interdisciplinary field.

InnoChain investigates the extended digital chain – the way that a shared digital platform can allow tools for analysis, fabrication and material design to interface so as to create new interdisciplinary methods and digital workflows for future building industry. Here, you will see a mix of physical prototypes showing how digital tools can make a new use of traditional craft techniques, how resource aware optimisation can lead to new structural designs and how shared digital platforms can lead to a new understanding of collaboration.

Technology in Architecture and Design

This exhibition will feature the work of InnoChain IAAC-UPC PhD Candidates Stephanie Chaltiel and Angelos Chronis. Angelos’ research Integrating Building Physics for Performance Control is investigating the potential of wind-driven form finding in architecture, aiming at optimising the natural ventilation potential of buildings. By integrating Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations and shape optimisation methods, it explores how aerodynamic forms can drive the shape of buildings.

In the framework of her research on Small Scale Robotic Manufacturing for Large Scale Buildings, Stephanie proposes to explore the making of a solidified membrane by erecting a light dry matter modules 5m tall wall and perform some drone spraying actions following a carefully calibrated sequence of coatings. Drying time and ingredients of each clay mix so that it matches the drone spraying tool capabilities are crucial and are highlighted in this InnoChain final exhibition at KADK Copenhagen.
